Immigration Physicals: What Does It Entail and Why Is It Required?

Zenith Primary and Urgent Care takes pride in providing Immigration Medical Exams – commonly referred to as Green Card Medicals – for individuals applying for immigration in Marlborough and nearby areas in Massachusetts. This essential phase in visa and green card application requests entails a thorough medical assessment conducted by a designated civil surgeon accredited by USCIS. Our dedicated medical team is ready to assist you throughout this procedure with attentiveness and accuracy.

Why Do People Need to Undergo Immigration Exams?

The medical examination for immigration purposes is conducted to confirm that individuals intending to enter the United States do not present a threat to health by checking for contagious diseases, making sure their vaccinations are current, and assessing their general health in accordance with the criteria established by U.S immigration officials. To learn more about why immigration physical exams are essential and the criteria that must be met, visit the CDC’s Immigration Medical Examinations page.

Each immigration physical is conducted in the following order:

First Visit: (Walk-ins are also welcome!)

  • Review of your paperwork and initiation of required medical tests.
  • Collection of necessary documentation and recording it on your I-693 form.
  • Physical examination and administration of any needed immunizations by the Civil Surgeon.

Second Visit:

  • Scheduled approximately 5-10 days after the first visit to allow for lab results.
  • Pick-up of the completed sealed documents and a copy for yourself and your lawyer if needed.

Please try to be fifteen minutes early for your appointment in case there is anything missing in your file. The exam begins with the Civil Surgeon conducting a detailed health history review and physical check-up. For patients under examination by a male Civil Surgeon, there will be a female staff member present. In addition, the Medical Assistant will provide any vaccinations or blood tests required during the visit.

You’ll receive a notification once we’ve received and reviewed all reports. Your documents are prepared for signing.

Mandated Vaccinations

Here are some of the vaccines usually needed for exams related to immigration purposes:

  • The combo vaccine for measles, mumps, and rubella
    • It provides defense against measles, rubella, and mumps, all of which are viral infections that spread easily. More information can be found on the CDC’s MMR Vaccine Information page.
  • Varicella (Chickenpox)
  • COVID-19
  • Three vaccines that protect against tetanus (lockjaw), diphtheria (an infection), and pertussis (whooping cough); the combination vaccine known as Tetanus Diphtheria Pertussis (TdP)
  • Influenza
    • It provides defense against the flu virus that leads to influenza and is essential during the flu season from October 1 to March 31. Refer to the CDC’s Influenza Vaccine Information page for additional information.
  • Hepatitis A and B
  • Pneumococcal Bacteria
  • Meningitis-Inducing Bacteria
  • Rotavirus
    • It causes stomach and intestinal infections in young children and helps shield children from rotavirus infections that lead to cases of diarrhea in babies and young kids. Check the CDC’s Rotavirus Vaccine Information page.
  • Haemophilus Influenzae Type B (Hib)
    • Helping to prevent Hib disease is important as it can lead to infections such as meningitis and pneumonia. Check CDC’s Hib Vaccine Information page for more information about this vaccine.
