Ear Infection & Ear Pain Treatment

Ear pain can interrupt sleep, make feeding uncomfortable for a baby, or leave an adult struggling to hear clearly.

Zenith Primary & Urgent Care evaluates ear pain and suspected ear infections in Marlborough, Massachusetts. Our urgent care team sees infants, children, teens and adults, with walk-in visits available seven days a week.

Walk-ins welcome | Infants, children, teens and adults

When to have ear pain checked

Consider a visit for persistent or worsening ear pain, a blocked or full feeling, drainage, reduced hearing, or ear discomfort with cold symptoms. Young children may tug at an ear, become unusually fussy or have trouble sleeping. These symptoms do not prove an ear infection; an examination helps identify the cause.

What an ear examination can tell us

The clinician will ask when symptoms started, review recent illnesses and examine the ear canal and eardrum. Pain may be related to a middle-ear infection, an outer-ear problem, wax or another condition. Tell us about previous ear surgery, ear tubes, medication allergies and any recent swimming or injury.

Treatment based on the cause

Your plan may include guidance for discomfort, prescription treatment when appropriate, or a follow-up examination. Some middle-ear infections improve without antibiotics; others need them. The decision depends on the examination, age and severity. Do not put objects or unprescribed drops into a painful or draining ear.

Ear care for infants and children

Infants are welcome at our urgent care clinic. Bring a list of medicines and describe feeding, wet diapers, sleep changes and any measured temperature. A baby younger than three months with a temperature of 100.4°F or higher needs immediate medical evaluation; contact the baby’s clinician promptly and use emergency care if the baby appears unwell or timely assessment is unavailable.

When urgent care is not enough

Seek emergency care for severe illness, a stiff neck, confusion, facial weakness or swelling behind the ear with significant pain or fever. Sudden hearing loss needs urgent same-day medical assessment. Call 911 for a life-threatening emergency.

What to Bring to Your Visit

  • Current medicines and medication allergies
  • Details of fever, drainage or changes in hearing
  • Previous ear surgery or ear tube history
