When to schedule an asthma review
Book a review if coughing, wheezing or chest tightness is affecting sleep or daily activities, or if you are using relief medicine more often than usual. A follow-up is also useful after urgent or emergency treatment, when prescriptions need review, or when you are unsure how to use an inhaler.
Bring your inhalers and symptom history
Tell the clinician about daytime and nighttime symptoms, recent flare-ups, smoking or vaping exposure and any work or home triggers. Bring your inhalers, spacer if you use one, medication list and previous breathing test results. This helps identify practical problems such as missed doses or difficulty using a device.
Review treatment and inhaler technique
Your clinician can review whether the current plan is meeting your needs and discuss medication changes when appropriate. Good inhaler technique matters. Ask for a demonstration or a check of your technique, and tell us if cost or side effects make it hard to follow the plan.
Plan for worsening symptoms
A written asthma action plan can explain your routine treatment, what changes to watch for and when to seek help. Discuss which medicines to use and what should prompt a call or urgent assessment. Testing or a specialist referral may be needed when the diagnosis is uncertain or symptoms remain difficult to control.
Know when to get emergency help
Call 911 for severe trouble breathing, difficulty speaking because of breathlessness, blue or gray lips, confusion or symptoms that are rapidly worsening. Follow your prescribed action plan while getting help. Do not wait for a scheduled primary care or video appointment during a serious attack.
What to Bring to Your Visit
- Your inhalers and spacer if you use one
